Ask for references and inquire about their previous wedding gigs. Check to see if they have a presence on social media where you can see their work. A seasoned DJ would point you to all their positive reviews and be happy to show and tell you how many weddings and events they have played.
I DJed a wedding at a local park that had no wedding planner, an awkward crowd and a loose schedule. This set the stage for a POTENTIALLY uncomfortable experience. These are the moments that turn the DJ into more than just a DJ. A good host and Emcee will orchestrate the event with finesse. By expertly guiding the guests and injecting fun into the proceedings, the DJ can transform what could have been a lackluster affair into a memorable celebration without a hitch.

Does your DJ cater his music to whoever is actually on the dancefloor? Do they seamlessly change genres to try and appeal to different guests? Are they on the mic enough? or too little? These are all things you can (and should) ask your DJ.
2. Musical Selection: Your Unique Playlist
I’ve experienced many different interactions when it comes to the couple providing music. Some have every single song planned out for the night, while others look to the DJ for recommendations. Both are OK!
The music planning process should be the easy part. With the software and tools at our disposal, the bride and groom shouldn’t feel the pressure to choose 100 songs for the night (unless that’s what they really want to do). We want to understand your vision and bring it to life.
I tell my clients for every 1 song you provide, I can provide 5-10 similar songs. We want to get an idea of your musical taste and preferences, and we can work our magic to fill in the blanks.
The DJ should ask for a ‘must-play’ list and a ‘do-not-play’ list. These are non-negotiables to further ensure that you, the clients, are happy with the music.
Does the DJ take song requests? This should be discussed beforehand. Do you trust your guests to play the right songs at the right time? Better yet, rely on the DJ to use his best judgement to keep the event flowing smoothly. They should communicate before, during, and after to you (and your guests) about this.
Read the room. This is the sixth sense of an experienced DJ. They should pay attention to the guests’ reactions and be ready to adjust the music accordingly. The goal is to keep the dance floor lively and ensure everyone is having a good time
Your wedding playlist should reflect your personalities, love story, and musical tastes. A great DJ will work closely with you to curate a playlist that resonates with both of you. Whether you’re into classic ballads, indie hits, or '90s throwbacks, communicate your preferences clearly. A skilled DJ can blend genres, mix old and new tracks, and keep the dance floor alive. Remember, it’s not just about the Cupid Shuffle—it’s about creating unique memories through music.
3. State-of-the-Art Equipment
A DJ’s gear can make or break the party. Inquire about your DJ’s equipment: sound systems, microphones, lighting, and backup plans.
A professional DJ invests in high-quality gear to ensure crystal-clear sound and reliability. They should also have backup equipment on standby in case of any technical glitches. Trust me, you don’t want the “I do’s” drowned out by crackling speakers or a flickering disco ball.
I list all of my main gear in my invoice to my clients. They know what to expect before even seeing any of it.
But let’s be honest, most of the time the bride and groom don’t care about your gear, they just want it to work. They should be swept up in the whirlwind of their big day. They might not be concerned with the specifics of the DJ’s gear. Their focus is on the joyous occasion, their loved ones, and the celebration of their union. They trust us, the DJs, to handle the technical side of things. And that’s exactly what we do. We ensure that every detail is delivered flawlessly, so all they have to worry about is living in the moment.
Ask about extra packages or services the DJ offers. You’d be surprised on all the add-on clients actually want at their wedding. Projectors, TVs, photobooths, up lights, fog machine, sparklers, karaoke, mobile dance floor, keyboards, the sky is the limit so don’t be afraid to ask what else they have to offer.
4. Communication Skills
Your DJ isn’t just there to spin tunes; they’re also your MC for the evening. Clear communication is essential. Meet with potential DJs in person or via video chat to assess their communication style. Are they friendly, approachable, and open to your ideas? Do they listen actively and ask questions about your vision? A DJ who understands your preferences and can smoothly announce the cake cutting or first dance is worth their weight in gold.
Communication also starts well before the wedding:

Final Check-In: A final meeting or communication to go over all details, confirm plans, and make any last-minute adjustments.
