How much does a wedding DJ cost?
A good wedding DJ can be a priceless choice in the success of a wedding. Their impact goes beyond the music to create a fun atmosphere, providing the correct music and announcements at the correct time.
The price of a DJ depends on many factors, and the conversation should always begin with your wedding vendors who have experience in the industry.
According to a survey asking 12,000 couples, TheKnot.com determined the national average expense on a Wedding DJ in 2022 was $1,500.
Costs in the Seattle region
Let’s consider some more local perspectives. WeddingWire is another authority on weddings which provide a study below:
According to WeddingWire, the average DJ cost in Seattle is $1,000. As you start to include more factors (see list below), the more you might see the cost range increase.
I always encourage clients to shop around, as many DJs provide different styles and services, and therefore prices. This may explain the discrepancy in average cost of DJ services between TheKnot and WeddingWire. The Knot is known for attracting more high-end wedding clientele.
Let's take a look a look at few more specific examples from Seattle area DJs:
Yourpugetsounds.com: stated on their website, their price is typically in the range of $1,500-$3,000
Seattledjpro.com: stated on their website, their average cost is about $500 per hour.
Thumbtack.com: stated on their website, wedding DJs can cost up to $1,200, but vary on many factors.
The truth is many DJs do not share their prices upfront. Each event is unique and tailored to the clients wants and needs. Because of this, it’s not uncommon for the DJ to collect all the information they can before being able to provide an accurate quote.
Factors that go into pricing
The price you pay should directly correlate to the amount of time you need the DJ and the services offered. Here are some common factors that may affect the price.
Ceremony vs. Reception: Do you need speakers and microphones for the ceremony? This would require additional equipment at a separate location from the ceremony & dance floor area. Twice the equipment may warrant additional costs.
Time: How many hours are you expecting the DJ to play? Some DJs will charge a flat rate for the whole night, while some may charge by the hour if they are expected to play long hours.
Venue: The standards of your venue may be higher (or lower) than usual. The DJ should be expected to fit the standard and paid accordingly. Additionally, larger venues may require more expensive equipment.
Music Selection: Do you just need music for dancing? Or do you need music at multiple different parts of your wedding? Prelude music, walk-in/walk-out music for the ceremony, cocktail hour, special dances, dinner, etc. can take extensive planning and coordination from both parties.
Other Services: The DJ may offer other services for an additional cost. These include uplighting, dance floor lighting, photobooths, video projections, karaoke, fog machines, sparklers/confetti, or other entertainment value.
Consultation and planning value: DJs can provide value and expertise while planning your event. The amount of time spent preparing for your event can vary greatly based on what you want out of your DJ.
Seasonality: Peak wedding season is usually during Summer and early Fall months. DJs must consider the opportunity costs when booking during peak wedding season, as it is much busier. You may be able to get better prices in the off-season from December to March.
